TIPI RAISING CHALLEGE

150 community members participate in cultural educational and competitive event.

On June 3, 2015 Tribal Ventures joined with Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Cultural Preservation in challenging community members, leaders, tribal programs, and reservation organizations to take part in a tipi raising challenge. The event attracted about 75 participants – from youth to elders – to the Wacipi ground in Eagle Butte, South Dakota.

The Cultural Preservation Department provided a tipi raising lesson where participants could learn and gain further understanding of the teaching of the tipi. Experienced and inexperienced worked together to raise a tipi.

A timed tipi raising challenge attracted six teams with the fastest tipi going up in 15 minutes and 45 seconds. The raised tipis were used as part of the Three Reservation Ventures meeting hosted by Tribal Ventures; 20 guests from the Lummi Nation, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, and the Northwest Area Foundation stayed in the tipis during their visit.
